The National Museum (in Czech Národní muzeum) is a Czech cultural museum and institution. The main building is located in Prague on the south east side of Wenceslas Square. It has about 14 million pieces in various collections of natural sciences, mineralogy, archeology, anthropology, numismatics and was founded in 1818 by Kašpar Maria Šternberg.
In addition to the historic building on Wenceslas Square, the museum system includes the new building located in Vinohradská 1, the Náprstek Museum of Asian, African and American cultures, the Czech Museum of Music, the Smetana Museum, the DvoÅ™ák Museum, the Lapidárium (Lapidary), the Ethnographic Museum - Musaion, Vítkov Hill National Memorial, the Jaroslav Ježek Memorial, the František Palacký Memorial and František Ladislav Rieger and other buildings located in other places in the Czech Republic.
The main building of the museum was designed in a Neo-Renaissance style by Josef Schulz, winner of the project competition held in 1883 and built between 1885 and 1891 [1]. Since 2011 the building is being renovated; the reopening is scheduled for 2018.
In the museum hall that serves as the "pantheon" of Czech culture, there are busts and statues of artists, scholars and writers, as well as some paintings by František Ženíšek, Václav Brožík and VojtÄ›ch Hynais.
