Domenico Grillo Palace Hotel

Domenico Grillo Palace is a historic building which is now a Hotel located in the square in the historic center of Genoa.

The building was included in the list of buildings registered with the Rolli of Genoa.

Built and decorated on behalf of the Marquis Domenico Grillo in 1545, above the loggia of the "hotels" Grillo, Negrone and Vivaldi, the building was enlarged and equipped with a new façade, rich in marble decorations and frescoes, by Giovan Battista Castello known as il Bergamasco in collaboration with Bernardo Spazio in 1560.

The residence is much admired for the pictorial cycles that animate the interiors, Sacrifice of Ifigenia and Stories of Psyche, and for the architectural and figurative ornaments, now almost completely disappeared, that the Bergamasco painted on the façade of piazza delle Vigne, creating an effect both monumental and airy thanks to the play of solids and voids offered by the tympanums, the string courses and the portal with fluted columns. The elevations were restored on the occasion of the G8 in Genoa in 2001.

Interesting and original is the internal distribution with which, despite the measured dimensions of the staircase and the small atrium, around which everything is articulated, the authors manage to recall the great sixteenth-century season with a path made of transparencies and suggestions starting from the loggia overlooking on the large and bright entrance, up to the columns, balustrades and frescoed cross vaults that guide the upper levels.
