The Unipol Arena building was built in December 1993, this facility hosted the basketball games of the two Bologna teams, Fortitudo and Virtus; since 1999 it has become the home solely of Virtus Bologna, when Fortitudo decided to move to the old PalaDozza, located in the center of Bologna.
But the building was born as an arena for live concerts and maintains this vocation: singers and groups from the music scene performed here such as Paul McCartney (2011), R.E.M. (1995, 2008), David Bowie (1996), The Who (2016), Oasis (1997), Depeche Mode (1998, 2001, 2009, 2014), Bruce Springsteen (1999, 2002, 2005, 2006), Queen (2017 ), Cranberries (1999, 2002), Red Hot Chili Peppers (2003, 2016), Anastacia (2005), Coldplay (2005, 2008), Alter Bridge (2016), Pearl Jam (2006), Green Day (2009, 2013 and 2017), Muse (2009, 2012), Metallica, Thirty Seconds to Mars (2010), Sting, Eros Ramazzotti, Vasco Rossi (2010), Elton John, Tina Turner, Spice Girls, Laura Pausini, Take That, Francesco Guccini, The Smashing Pumpkins, Slash, Jennifer Lopez, Justin Bieber (2013, 2016), Subsonica, Black Sabbath (2014), Francesco De Gregori (2015), Zucchero Fornaciari (from 1995 to present), Foo Fighters (2015), Claudio Baglioni (from 1993 to present), Pooh (2016), Deep Purple (2017), The Cure, Katy Perry (2018) and many others.
In the summer of 2008, restyling works took place which led to the abandonment of a multicolored design (yellow, orange, gray and purple) of the interiors, for white walls and seats and black stairs (Virtus' corporate colors); a gallery-museum dedicated to the history of Virtus was set up, a new parquet smoothed in white, with transparent Vs and stars, and an underground corridor with black and white graphics for access to the playing field from the changing rooms. 6 video projection maxi-screens were also installed, of which 2 for advertising, replay and connections from the underground corridor and two for scoreboards.
