Its name (Santu Lussurgiu) derives from the saint-soldier Lussorio, martyred in 303 or 304 under the Roman emperor Diocletian.
The name of the saint is mentioned for the first time in a document dated 559 addressed by Pope Gregory the Great to the bishop of Cagliari Gianuario
