The Chiaia Funicular - Parco Margherita Station - Cimarosa Station - Virtual Tour 360°

The Chiaia Funicular is a public transport system in the city of Naples, which connects the central area of ??Vomero (Valley Station "Parco Margherita") or the Vanvitelli station of line 1 of the underground, with the Chiaia district (Mountain station " Cimarosa "), in the area of ??the Amedeo district above the Riviera di Chiaia, near the Amedeo station of line 2.

The funicular has 4 stations and is "mixed track". In fact, two trains with a maximum capacity of 300 people alternate uphill and downhill. The intersection between the two directions of travel takes place in the double track section between the Corso Vittorio Emanuele and Palazzolo stations. The winch is placed at the Cimarosa station.

It was built at the end of the 19th century, in 1889, and it was the first Neapolitan funicular to be built.

Initially it was steam powered and then it was electrified at the beginning of the twentieth century; its length is about 500 meters with a maximum gradient of 29.18%.

The route consists of four stations, including the two terminus.

The funicular was inaugurated on October 15, 1889 by the Banca Tiberina, owner of a lot of building land in the Vomero area.

Built by the Savigliano workshops, the plant was initially powered by two steam engines.

After a few years of operation, having ascertained the lack of functionality of the steam engines, the electrification of the line was opted for: the funicular was then inaugurated again on February 27, 1900.

The modernized line remained in operation until 1976, with some renovations: in 1914 new carriages arrived, while in 1916 work began on the Palazzolo station, inaugurated ten years later.

In February 1973 the Ferrovie del Vomero, up to then managers of the plant, sold the funicular to ATAN, together with the Montesanto funicular.
