Catacombs of Saints Marcellino and Pietro - Mausoleum of Santa Elena

The cemetery "with the two laurels" are the Catacombs of Saints Marcellino and Pietro or the Mausoleum of Santa Elena.

At the third mile of the ancient Via Labicana, corresponding to the current Via Casilina, there was the locality ad duas lauros, that is "to the two laurels", shrubs traditionally found in the emperor's residences.

Excavated between the 3rd and 5th centuries AD, the Catacombs of SS. Marcellin and Peter hosted very rich Christians who left wonderful frescoes for posterity, now restored to their original splendor through the laser technique.

With its 18 thousand square meters and its 16 meters deep, these catacombs represent an authentic treasure of underground Christian Rome.
