National Gallery of Modern and Contemporary Art


The National Gallery of Modern and Contemporary Art houses the most complete collection dedicated to Italian and foreign art between the 19th and 21st centuries. Among paintings, drawings, sculptures and installations, the almost 20,000 works in the collection are an expression of the main artistic currents of the last two centuries, from Neoclassicism to Impressionism, from Divisionism to the historical avant-gardes of the early twentieth century, from Futurism and Surrealism, at most conspicuous nucleus of works of Italian art between the 1920s and 1940s, from the 20th century movement to the so-called Roman School.

 

 

Archives
The archives of the National Gallery of Modern and Contemporary Art contain documents and collections that tell the history of the museum and offer the public valuable research tools on Italian cultural and artistic history from the nineteenth century to today.

Library
The Library keeps and makes available to the public 79,500 inventoried volumes, 1,500 specialized publications, a collection of catalogs documenting Italian exhibitions of the twentieth century and the patrimony of monographs and exhibition catalogs, rare volumes and artist's books acquired since the end of the nineteenth century.

Restoration
The National Gallery houses a Painting and Sculpture Restoration Laboratory and a Graphics Restoration Laboratory. Created in 1976, the museum laboratories are the only state museum institution to deal operationally with the conservation and restoration of modern and contemporary works of art. The laboratories keep the archive of the restorations carried out over the years which can be consulted upon request.
