Fortress of Verrua Savoia

At the gates of Monferrato, the Fortress of Verrua, a characterizing element of the town and the territory, is located south of Crescentino, on a rugged and elevated hill from which it takes its name, of Roman origins, Verruca.

Precisely because of its strategic position, the Fortress, over the centuries from the Middle Ages to the last great siege of 1704/1705, played a fundamental role in defense, disputed by the powerful local feudal lords, until it became part of the Savoy dominions.

Located in the municipality of Verrua Savoia, on the first hills of Monferrato on the border between the provinces of Turin, to which it belongs, of Vercelli, Asti and Alessandria, the Fortress is located on the right orographic bank of the Po, at the confluence with the Dora Baltea and south of the rice-growing plain of the Vercelli area.

Now reduced to ruins due to the vicissitudes of the last century, the Fortress has had a new life since 2005, when it was first opened to the public, after about 50 years of total abandonment and after having been the subject of major restorations.
