The Basilicata Region, or also commonly Lucania (the latter was the name in use from 1932 to 1947, although this term identifies a historical region with different borders), is an Italian region with ordinary statute of southern Italy of 566 051 inhabitants with capital Potenza.
It includes the province of Potenza and the province of Matera.
Other main centers, in addition to the two capitals Potenza and Matera, are Melfi, Pisticci and Policoro.
It borders to the north and east with Puglia, to the west with Campania, to the south with Calabria, to the south-west it is bathed by the Tyrrhenian Sea and to the south-east it is bathed by the Ionian Sea.
The history of Basilicata takes place starting from the first human frequentations in the Paleolithic and the development of indigenous communities, passing through the colonization of Magna Graecia, the Roman conquest, and the subsequent Byzantine, Lombard and Norman dominions, to then follow the events of the Kingdom of Naples and finally the Kingdom of Italy and the Italian Republic.
