Sforzesca Fortress of Dozza

The Rocca of Dozza is a monumental complex of medieval origin transformed by Caterina Sforza into a fortified castle and used, in the Renaissance period, as a noble residence.

The Sforza fortress maintains its medieval structure unaltered: in fact, the interiors and kitchens are in excellent condition, embellished with tools (which can be dated to 1500), fireplaces and the well.

The history of the Rocca is made up of architectural evolutions and transformations:

Medieval Fortress (1300-1480)

Renaissance fortress (1480-1554)

Renaissance residence (1565-1594)

Eighteenth-century residence (1795)

Since 1960 the Rocca has been owned by the Municipality, which has made it a House Museum open to the public. It is the heart and symbol of the city. Its presence has strongly influenced the shape of the town of Dozza, a castle village that stretches before it and which gathers its historical memory in it.

The elegant rooms are still furnished with well-made furniture; on the walls you can still admire numerous paintings and tapestries dating back to the eighteenth century.

You can also visit the weapons room, the prisons (with torture instruments) and the characteristic razor well.

The fortress also houses a small but interesting art gallery, which also includes a collection of works by Norma Mascellani, a Bolognese painter who was awarded honorary citizenship.

Also worthy of attention remain the Rivellino and the Rocchetta of fourteenth-century origin.
