Teatro Comunale Riccardo Zandonai

It was 1782 when the first stone was laid for the theater commissioned by Count Alberti, by Doctor Luigi Carpentari de Mittemberg and designed by the Bolognese Filippo Maccari. On 26 May 1784 it was inaugurated with the comic opera "Giannina and Bernardone" by Domenico Cimarosa. Since then, accompanied by the affection of the people of Rovereto, he has crossed the history of the city, passing through restorations, changes of ownership and two world wars. Between 1914 and 1918 it was used as a deposit and stabling for horses, being seriously damaged. In 1920 it was purchased by the Municipality of Rovereto, took the name of "Zandonai Theater" and risked having its boxes replaced by more "modern" tiers in reinforced concrete. On 30 April 1924 the restored theater reopened with Riccardo Zandonai's “Juliet and Romeo”.

In September 2002 work began with the restoration of the structures, the paintings, the wooden apparatus, with adjustments to the plant and safety standards and overhaul of the furnishings. On the basis of historical documents found with archival research, the history of remote and recent interventions has been reconstructed, allowing the recovery and restoration of the façade on Corso Bettini of 1871, the large ceiling above the stalls, the four orders of wooden boxes, the decorations of the ceilings of the foyer, recovered from under a layer of plaster.
In addition to the recovery and enhancement of the historic casket, a new scenic tower and modern technical systems were built to allow the ancient theater to feel in step with the times again.
