Palace of the Popes

Diocese of Viterbo, Palazzo dei Papi, AlessandroIV exhibition halls and Stables.

It was erected in its current form by expanding the palace seat of the Episcopal Curia of the city when Pope Alexander IV (1254 - 1261, pope from 1254), due to the hostility of the people and the Roman bourgeoisie, led by Senator Brancaleone degli Andalò, moved the seat of the Papal Curia in 1257 in Viterbo.

The expansion was arranged and cared for by the Capitano del Popolo Raniero Gatti, who belonged to an influential city family. Among other things, he had a large audience hall built, with the consent of Pope Clement IV, known today as the "Aula (or Hall) of the Conclave" due to the fact that it housed the first and longest conclave of the history, namely that of 1268-1271, which lasted 1006 days.

Also noteworthy is the "Loggia delle benedizioni" (better known as "Loggia dei Papi"), with its elegant and harmonious architecture, built in 1267 by the will of the Captain of the People Andrea Gatti, during the pontificate of Pope Clement IV himself, who loved so much the city of Viterbo, and by the Viterbo people he was reciprocated with equal love, so much so that, on his death, they clamored for his beatification.

The fall of part of a wing of the building, recently built and which took place on 11 May 1277, mortally wounded Pope John XXI. The visit of the Palace is possible by contacting the Museo del Colle del Duomo di Viterbo.

The building is part of the monumental pole of the Colle del Duomo di Viterbo.
