Modena

The city of Modena was founded in 183 BC, as a colony under Roman law, by the triumvirs Marco Emilio Lepido, Tito Ebuzio Parro and Lucio Quinzio Crispino.

From 1598 to 1859 it was the capital of the Duchy of Modena and Reggio and is an ancient university and archbishopric.

The Palazzo Ducale was already the seat of the Central Italian Military School of the Kingdom of Sardinia in 1859, which evolved over the decades to become in 1947 the Military Academy of the Army and of the Carabinieri.

The Cathedral, the Civic Tower and the Piazza Grande of the city have been included, since 1997, in the list of Italian World Heritage Sites by UNESCO.
