Lecce

Lecce is a city in Puglia known for its Baroque style buildings. In the central Piazza del Duomo, there is the Cathedral of Lecce with a double facade and a bell tower. The Basilica of Santa Croce is characterized by sculptures and a rose window.

Nearby are the Column of Sant'Oronzo, from the Roman era, which on the top houses the bronze statue of the patron saint of the city, and the Roman amphitheater, below street level.

City of art of Italy, it is known as "the Florence of the South", "the Florence of the Rococò era" or "the Lady of the Baroque": the ancient Messapian origins and the archaeological remains of Roman domination are mixed with wealth and the exuberance of the baroque, typically seventeenth-century, of the churches and palaces of the center, built in Lecce stone, a malleable limestone and very suitable for working with the chisel.

The architectural development and decorative enrichment of the facades was particularly fruitful during the Kingdom of Naples and characterized the city in such an original way as to give rise to the definition of Lecce Baroque.

It was among the six Italian cities candidate for the European Capital of Culture for the year 2019 as well as the Italian Capital of Culture in 2015. [8] As of 2016, among the cities of Puglia it is the one that records the highest number of tourist arrivals and presences, second only to Naples in the southern peninsula of Italy.
