The City of the Other Economy is in Testaccio, inside the Campo Boario of the former Slaughterhouse.

The former slaughterhouse in Rome, commonly called the Slaughterhouse of Testaccio, was originally a complex of pavilions on the slopes of Monte dei cocci used for the slaughter and distribution of meat destined for the capital.

In the center of Rome, in the ancient restored spaces of Campo Boario di Testaccio, 3,500 square meters of exhibition, sale, events and meetings for the promotion of the other economy: organic and social agriculture, fair trade, renewable energy and green building, reuse and recycling, sustainable mobility, but also a bookshop and a playroom, a biobar and a bio-restaurant.

A place to promote conscious citizenship.

The City of the Other Economy is one of the first spaces in Europe entirely dedicated to those economic practices that are characterized by the use of processes with low environmental impact, which guarantee a fair distribution of value, which do not pursue profit and growth. at any cost and that put people and the environment at the center. The city was born as a place for the promotion of the whole other Roman economy, offering the realities of the sector exhibition spaces, meeting places, training, research and development.


Exhibition and sale of products.

The City is organized in spaces for the exhibition and sale of organic, fair trade products, recycling or reuse of materials. A restaurant and a bar offer food and drinks made with products from organic farming and fair trade. A library dedicated to boys and girls and their parents.


Diffusion of culture and sharing of knowledge.

In the city there are spaces for holding conferences, seminars and training courses. The large square is used for fairs, markets, exhibitions and shows.


Participatory planning and management.

The management project of the Città dell'Altra Economia Consortium - CAE has an inclusive and open character. A Steering Committee made up of a large network of partners provides management indications and is involved in the planning of activities.


Industrial archeology and bio-architecture.

The headquarters of the City of the Other Economy occupies 3,500 square meters recovered from the building of the ancient Weights of the Cattle, from the canopies and from the canopies of the Campo Boario. The conservative restoration intervention, in harmony with the ethical aim of the City of the Other Economy, was carried out according to the principles of bio-architecture and with innovative solutions respecting the historical context. The project is part of the larger recovery of the Slaughterhouse area that will give rise to the City of Arts.


How to reach us:

The City of the Other Economy is in Rome, in the Testaccio district, inside the Campo Boario of the ex-Slaughterhouse.

It can be reached by bicycle (racks inside) and by car, ample parking, from Largo Dino Frisullo or from Lungotevere Testaccio.
