Galleria Matteotti or del Libro

Gallery that hosts numerous commercial activities including the Book Gallery which is one of the historical activities of Mestre.

That 27 October 1912 Mestre celebrated two events at the same time: the opening of the municipal aqueduct designed by Pietro Crepet and the inauguration of the Matteotti gallery, which united the two buildings built by the Toniolo family with steel and glass, in full Parisian style. next to the theater which was under construction at the time and which opened its doors with a big party and Verdi's Rigoletto, a few months later, on 30 August 1913. The design was that of Giorgio Francesconi's trusted professional of the Toniolos.

The first shop to be established in the gallery, at number 2, was Angeloni, opened in 1927.

The flooring of the Matteotti gallery is still original as the roof and is one of the last examples of Liberty style in the center of Mestre, together with the Excelsior which has a future as a shop and no longer as a cinema with the multiplex operation, in a Mestre that it tries, not without difficulty, to be a city.

“Galleria in Galleria” is a cultural, social and educational project that aims not only to recreate a space that once was for meeting and confrontation but also to enhance a historical space of memories such as the G. Matteotti Gallery.

We want to thank the Toniolo family for sharing this space and their family memories that we are happy to be able to propose here again so that a piece of the history of Mestre is not forgotten.

"The whole area is transformed: there are numerous villas, the Matteotti Gallery and the Toniolo Theater.

What a great step of progress between the old Mestre and the new center!

The glass roof that connects the two buildings of the Gallery, the architectural structures of it and of the Theater have only a small part of the justification of an economic criterion. They reflect the desire to embellish Mestre, giving the new buildings in the center an aspect of modernity that was very courageous at that time. "
