MeTe - Museum of Memory and the Territory

The Museum, located in the Casale, the oldest district of Siculiana, houses the relics of the Garibaldian doctor Dr. Giuseppe Basile, tools and utensils concerning the wheat cycle, the winemaking tradition and other trades.

Of particular interest is the vintage photographic exhibition and the multimedia system with which to interact between the various contents. The religious section and the one relating to the memory of the Fallen of the Great War complete the exhibition.

The Mission

The Museum of Memory and the Territory of Siculiana is to be understood as a space in which the individual and collective memories of a community are inscribed in the history of the places and the local territory, trespassing from a more or less distant past to the present. The declared objective is the formation of a critical and constructive conscience towards themes and initiatives aimed at social cohesion and the conscious re-elaboration of the cultural features of this community. A museum that is not configured as a “cemetery of old and dusty objects”, but as a tool for the active participation of citizens and the enhancement of the genius loci.

History of the Foundation

The idea of ??establishing the Museum was conceived in 2009 when some young people from Siculiana decided to found the ALT Associazione Leisure and Tourisme. In 2010 the Association organized in collaboration with the Municipality of Siculiana the "Celebrations of the Eighteenth Century" of the town's Foundation; for the occasion, the audio-video-photographic exhibition entitled "Fragments of Memory" is set up in the premises of the Chiaramonte Castle. On that occasion the ALT Association, the Siculiana On Line association and numerous citizens collaborated by recovering and acquiring various vintage photographs in files. In 2011 the ALT association organized the Permanent Laboratory for Ethnographic Research by organizing, among other things, the first Summer Camps for the Museum of Memory and of the Territory. In 2012 the research work continues and at the same time we proceed with a progressive collection of objects of ethno-anthropological interest. During the 2012 Summer Camps, the association elaborates several Open Air Museum Itineraries. In 2013 the Municipality of Siculiana authorized the ALT association to use the museum premises located in via Picarella, in the charming Casale district. In 2013 the association, having not received any public contribution for the preparation of the Museum, began to raise funds from private individuals. In the summer of 2013, during the Summer Camps, the Laboratory for the Cataloging of Demo-ethno-anthropological Heritage is organized. Since October 2013, the construction work starts with the very few funds raised among private individuals. In the first months of 2014, the association continued the set-up work and fundraising. On 30 April 2014, after years of hard work and hard work, the association realized that idea conceived in 2009: to found the #MeTe Museum of Memory and of the Territory.

Since 2015 we have been dealing with Urban Regeneration, recovering the historic center of the town with artistic installations and reclamation works. To date, #MeTe represents a collective museum that expands across the territory, becoming a widespread open-air museum. For institutional activities, the Museum does not receive any public funding and is supported thanks to the work and personal funds of its members.
