On the occasion of the opening of the Diocesan Museum of Naples, which winds inside the baroque church which remained closed for many years, works of great value have returned such as the Annunciation and the Immaculate Conception of 1646, by Charles Mellin from Lorraine, in first chapel on the left.
St. Francis receiving the symbols of beatification and holiness, a rare iconography by Solimena, in the third chapel on the right; and the tender Madonna with Child by Massimo Stanzione, located in the sacristy. The museum itinerary is composed of significant themes of the Christian faith lived and manifested in the Neapolitan Church: on the nave floor, there is the representation of "San Gennaro", patron saint of Naples and the depiction of "Mary", model of life for Christians.
Upstairs the first theme is that of the "Mystery and Sacrifice of Christ", followed by that of the "Martyrs" and then by the "Consecrated life" of those who have manifested the Faith through monasticism or religious orders.
These themes of Christianity find formidable descriptors in painters such as Andrea Vaccaro, Paolo de Matteis and Luca Giordano; but also, in the Flemish Teodoro d'Errico, in Francesco Solimena, Aniello Falcone, and Marco Pino da Siena.
Furthermore, upon entering the Museum, which extends for 3000 square meters, you will be able to discover, in the Sala dei Preziosi, the rare 12th century Stauroteca guardian of a fragment of the Cross of Christ and the 14th century tempera table with a gold background, which it represents a portrait of the archbishop of Naples Umberto d'Ormont.
Tables, canvases, frescoes, sculptures, gold and silver ... so many works to admire, once closed in deposits and safes, the arrangement of which highlights the most salient moments of the chosen themes, thanks to which the Diocesan Museum becomes, in the words of His Eminence Crescenzio Sepe “… point of reference both for a wise review of the believing history of the local community expressed in the form of the arts, and for an equally wise cultural reading of today”. The two paths, the medieval one and the baroque one, complement each other, forming a unique synergy that leads us along the thread of the history of Neapolitan art in which to find our roots and those of our faith.
