Civic Museums of Treviso - Santa Caterina Museum

The Civic Museums of Treviso currently have three museum locations undergoing partial renovation.

The headquarters in the former convent of the Servi di Maria, known as Santa Caterina, is intended for the Gallery of Medieval, Renaissance and Modern Art, as well as hosting the permanent Archaeological Section.

The Archaeological Section integrates the significant civic collections with finds from the latest scientific excavations conducted in the city, documenting 100,000 years of human presence and activity between the Prealps, the Piave and the Sile. The route covers prehistory, the Venetian Iron Age, Roman times up to the formation and development of the urban center of Treviso.

The Art Gallery, however, offers a journey through the artistic production of the city and its territory, focusing attention on the period from the 14th century to the early 19th century.

The collection includes works by artists and artisan workshops of the fourteenth century and international Gothic, paintings and oils on canvas from the Venetian Renaissance (Giovanni Bellini, Cima da Conegliano, Capriolo, Paris Bordon, Titian, Pozzoserrato, Jacopo Bassano), large seventeenth-century canvases from San Theonist (Pietro Muttoni known as della Vecchia, Bartolomeo Scaligero, Padovanino), portraits, views and allegorical subjects of eighteenth-century Venice and Classicism and Romanticism (Ricci, Tiepolo, Rosalba Carriera, Guardi, Appiani, Hayez, Ippolito Caffi, Luigi Querena).

Inside the former church, in addition to the original frescoes by artists such as Giovanni da Bologna and Gentile da Fabriano, detached frescoes from the famous cycle of the Stories of Saint Ursula, a masterpiece by Tomaso da Modena dating back to around 1355, are on display.

These frescoes, saved in 1883 from the church of Santa Margherita thanks to the resourcefulness of Luigi Bailo, founder of the Treviso museum institution in 1879, are visible and constitute a precious artistic heritage.
