ISIDAS - National Historical Museum of Sanitary Art

The National Historical Museum of Sanitary Art is located inside the Santo Spirito Hospital in Rome.

The museum originates from the original anatomical museum which in the 1930s was joined by the collections of Giovanni Carbonelli and Pietro Capparoni, founders of the museum. The purpose of the original museum, of which the collections still remain, was educational.

The two of them were joined by Mariano Borgatti. It was the Rome international exhibition of retrospective art in 1911 that gave the inspiration for the creation of today's museum.

Thus, in 1920 the Institute for the Historical Museum of Health Art was founded as a Moral Institution (R.D. n.1746 of 14 May 1922) which took the name of Istituto Storico Italiano dell'Arte Sanitaria, I.S.I.D.A.S. Subsequently, in 1934 it was transformed into the Academy of History of Health Art or A.S.A.S. with the aim of carrying out historical-medical studies and founding the museum.

It was established at the behest of the three promoters - General Mariano Borgatti, Prof. Giovanni Carbonelli, Prof. Pietro Capparoni - and of the highest representatives of the City of Rome and the Nation, such as: the Municipality of Rome, the Ministries of the Interior, of Public Education, of War and the Navy, the Sovereign Military Order of Malta, the Mauritian Order of Turin, the Italian Red Cross and the Pio Istituto di Santo Spirito e Ospedali Riuniti of Rome.

In 1929 the Santo Spirito institute granted a wing of the hospital located in the former Alessandrina lane.

The museum thus created is made up of historical collections combined with the original ones from the 1911 exhibition, to which were added in 1931 that of Giovanni Carbonelli and in 1939 that of General A. Cavalli Mulinelli and later those of Giuseppe and Orlando Solinas.
