Island of Okinawa

The island of Okinawa is the largest of the group of islands of Okinawa and those of Ryukyu, Japan.

The city of Naha, the capital of Okinawa Prefecture, is located there. From Okinawa comes the martial art of karate.

The island of Okinawa bases its economy mainly on tourism, largely from the rest of Japan, being a tropical island with beautiful beaches and an intact coral reef.

The island is of significant historical interest: the bloody battle of Okinawa took place here in 1945 which saw more than 1.900 Japanese suicide missions and the considerable damage inflicted on the USS Enterprise and the large number of civilian and military victims (150,000) prompted the President Truman to the use of the atomic bomb to end the conflict.
