Historical sources (Pliny, Nh.V.76; Silio Italico, III.256) the city was founded by the Phoenicians around 1100-1000 BC.
During the Roman dominion Leptis, acquired the nickname of "Magna".
In 1982 it was included in the UNESCO World Heritage List.
