San Marco Evangelista al Campidoglio (also known more simply as San Marco) is a basilica in Rome, located in Piazza Venezia, next to Palazzo Venezia. It is the national church of the Venetians residing in Rome.
Dedicated to St. Mark the Evangelist, it was built in 336 by Pope Mark and rebuilt in 833 by Pope Gregory IV; the basilica shows the baroque decoration due to the restorations of the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries.
In 336 Pope Mark built a church dedicated to the evangelist saint whose name he bore in a place called ad Pallacinas. In the acts of the synod of Pope Symmachus of 499, the church is remembered as Titulus Marci.
The church was restored in 792 by Pope Adrian I, but less than fifty years later, in 833, Pope Gregory IV decided to rebuild it.
The church maintained its appearance, except for the addition of the bell tower in 1154 and the loggia of blessings on the facade, built in the Renaissance style at the behest of Pope Paul II, in 1465-1470; on this occasion, the Venetian pope granted the church to the Venetians residing in Rome.
The current appearance of the church is linked to the restoration begun in 1654-1657 and then completed at the behest of Cardinal Angelo Maria Querini in 1735-1750, in which the Baroque imprint that the basilica retains today was given.
