Florentine of Puglia - Castel Fiorentino

The medieval village of Castel Fiorentino (or Fiorentino of Puglia), whose ruins are located in the countryside of Torremaggiore 10 km from the town on the provincial road San Severo-Castelnuovo della Daunia.

Fiorentino fo Puglia was a border Byzantine village, it was re-founded by the catapano Basilio Boioannes around 1018.

Later, it fell under Norman, then Swabian, and finally Angevin control. Fiorentino became famous because the emperor Frederick II died there in 1250.

Among the ruins of the ancient medieval city emerge the remains of the cathedral, dedicated to Sant'Angelo, "reflecting the expansion of the Michaelic cult from the Gargano pole".

Reduced to the rank of archpriesthood, it was still officiated in the sixteenth century.
