Rocca Albornoz Etruscan National Museum

The National Etruscan Museum Rocca Albornoz is the archaeological museum of the city of Viterbo, in the north of Lazio, and is mainly dedicated to Etruscan archeology.

The Rocca Albornoz, seat of the National Archaeological Museum, is leaning against a part of the path of the city walls and dominates the square below where there is a peperino fountain, designed by Vignola.

Built in 1354 by Cardinal Egidio Albornoz, the fortress after a series of destructions benefited from a renovation in 1506 promoted by Pope Julius II who called the Bramante in order to add the courtyard and the central fountain.

Partially destroyed by allied bombing during the Second World War.

After the damage of the Second World War, the fortress was recovered between 1960 and 1979 with the support of the BAA Superintendence of Lazio and the Archaeological Superintendence for Southern Etruria which transformed it into a museum.
