Severian Amphitheater

Built by the workers of the Alban Legion in the early third century. AD, was placed beyond the north-east side of the Castra.

Elliptical in shape, it was also built both by digging into the rocky bank and by building masonry through the use of different masonry techniques. In the Middle Ages it was transformed into a mineral quarry and a Christian cemetery.

In this period two oratories were built, one obtained in the third archway and another excavated in the rock on the left side of the cavea.

Today of the original building only the first floor supported by about thirty archways, a part of the triumphal entrances and the whole cavea which boasts a major axis of 113 m remain, it is estimated that the amphitheater was originally 22 m high.
