Sepulcher of the Scipioni - Virtual Tour 360°

About 300 meters from Piazzale Numa Pompilio, at number 9 of Via di Porta San Sebastiano, is the Sepulcher of the Scipioni, the monumental tomb of one of the most famous families of ancient Rome.

The building, built at the beginning of the third century BC digging directly into the cappellaccio bench, it looks like a square room divided by a series of galleries subsequently expanded to house up to 32 sarcophagi.

At the end of the main gallery was the sarcophagus of the founder Lucio Cornelio Scipione Barbato, consul in 298 BC, the original of which is now on display in the Vatican Museums.

The facade of the sepulcher, reworked by Scipione l'Emiliano in the second century. BC, it appeared with a high base on which there were three entrances and three niches intended to house the statues depicting the poet Ennio (who had celebrated the glories of the family), Publio Cornelio Scipione the African (triumphant to Zama) and Lucio Cornelio Scipio the Asian.
