Trinity Monastery of St. Sergius


The Trinity Monastery of St. Sergius is the most important monastery and spiritual center of the Russian Orthodox Church.


Located in the city of Sergiev Posad, about 70 km north-east of Moscow, on the road connecting the Russian capital with Yaroslavl, it was founded around 1345 by Sergius of Radonezh. Headquarters of the Russian Orthodox Church until 1988, the monastery is now open to tourism and is part of the UNESCO World Heritage Site.


Inside the complex there are five churches, including the Church of San Giovanni Battista, built in the 17th century. thanks to the financing of the merchant and businessman Stroganov.


The Church is considered to be one of the most significant buildings in the Moscow Baroque style. The roof is dominated by five golden domes.


The frescoes were renovated in 1948 in imitation of the 1872 originals.

The interior is also embellished with iconostasis, altars with inlays and a staircase made in 2009 to a design by the Florentine architect Dimitri Priori with marble and stone supplied by the company. Artmarmo by Vinicio Bazzicchi & C. from Pietrasanta.
