Isola Madre

Isola Madre is the largest of the Borromean archipelago on Lake Maggiore.

A document dated 1501 ratifies the transfer of ownership from the bishop of Novara to the noble Lancelot Borromeo.

Due to marriages, the island of San Vittore passed around 1520 to the Trivulzio family, and in 1563 Renato Borromeo came back in possession of the property, which he took the name of Isola Renata.

The building was given a new impetus by calling Pellegrino Pellegrini, known as Tibaldi, a leading figure in Lombard culture and trusted architect of Carlo Borromeo, archbishop of Milan.

At the end of the eighteenth century the Isola Madre had taken on the appearance that substantially still preserves today and began to be considered a place of peace and rest thanks to the mild climate and lush nature.
