Arena Normanno-Svevo Castle

The Castle of Arena, built in the 11th century by the Normans, occupies a strategic position. Halfway between the Ionian sea and the Tyrrhenian sea it represents one of the most original architectural finds of central-southern Calabria.

It was built by Ruggero in defense of Mileto, in a strategic and impregnable place, it is placed on a mighty spur of rock. Ruggero's thought was to defend the capital from a sudden attack from behind from that east coast. To accomplish this important task, Ruggero Conclubet was inaugurated as the first Earl of Arena, whose descendants of the latter will continue to dominate in the Arena for 600 years.

It is thanks to this castle that the so-called "Castellana di Arena" is held every year. A historical re-enactment of the Arena's splendor of the year one thousand that arouses great success and great public participation.

A real leap into the past in which medieval culture is projected between dances, music, flag-wavers, soldiers, displays of armaments of the time.
