Maida Castle

The first fortified nucleus probably already existed in the 11th century, when Roberto and Ruggero il Guiscardo stopped at Maida before reaching Reggio.

During the Norman domination the fortress was enlarged and used as a gathering place for troops. In 1223 the guest of the castle was Frederick II, who established an imperial hunting reserve in Maida.

The building was renovated again in 1269, by the will of King Charles, the Maidesi, in fact, tired of the oppression of the feudal lords had destroyed the manor.

Today the rooms of the district prisons remain, the underground rooms and a good part of the mighty perimeter walls along which a stringcourse stone curb runs and, higher up, a beautiful arched frame.
