Church of San Gregorio dei Muratori

The Church of San Gregorio dei muratori is an oratory in Rome, in the Campo Marzio district, in via Leccosa.

It constituted the oratory of the homonymous church which has now disappeared and was built in 1527 by the Confraternity of the Masons and dedicated to their patron saint, Gregory the Great. Originally it was close to the port of Ripetta, which has now disappeared; it is currently incorporated into a recently built building (1934), at the end of an alley.

The interior has frescoes from the life of St. Gregory, decorated with putti in stucco and gilding; the floor is in original terracotta. The peculiarity of the church is that its nave is wider than it is long, and the external façade, as we see it today, runs parallel to the nave, so that the two entrance doors enter on the right side of the church, instead of on the back.

Today the church is entrusted to the care of the Priestly Fraternity of St. Peter who celebrates there, with the permission of Pope Benedict XVI, in the ancient rite in Latin.
