Municipality of Giarre

Giarre (Siciliano Giarri), si trova in provincia di Catania , a due passi dalle assolate spiagge del Mar Ionio e dalle nevi dell'Etna .

It seems that in the territory of the current Giarre the Greek city of Callìpoli rose, founded by Chalcidese settlers in the seventh century BC. The first news of the village dates back to the eighteenth century, when the first inhabited nucleus was formed to depend on the County of Mascali, an ecclesiastical fief.

To date, although there is no certain source of the correspondence between Callipolis and the Ionian town, traces of a Roman farm and clay artefacts and coins from the Greek and Roman era have been found.

Il suo nome è da attribuire alle stazioni di posta dove si trovavano le giare dove i cavalli potevano abbeverarsi. Il paese si staccò da Mascali nel 1815, poco dopo l'abolizione dei feudi e si costituì come comunità autonoma.

Inevitabile dire che il paese è una delle stazioni dove passa il treno della FCE (Ferrovia Circumetnea) , che percorre l'intera base del vulcano Etna.
