Doebbing Palace Museum

The Doebbing Palace Museum is located in the former bishop's palace of the diocese of Sutri and takes its name from Joseph Bernard Doebbing, bishop of the united dioceses of Nepi and Sutri from 1900 to 1916.

The bishopric of Sutri attests the ancient Christian roots of the city since the first centuries of the Middle Ages.

Seat of numerous cardinals of high lineage, including a Pope, Pius V, promoter of the Tridentine reform, and Father Joseph Bernard Doebbing.

Born in Germany in 1855, in 1900 he was elected bishop of Nepi and Sutri.

It is precisely by his will that a radical restructuring of the bishop's palace is carried out. In fact, he was responsible for the neo-Gothic structure of the building, the addition of battlements, the clock tower, the balcony and other important changes to the original layout, dating back to the 13th century. Bishop Doebbing died in Rome in 1916 after a short illness.

The building, seat of the diocese of Sutri until 1986, was the subject, in the period 2010/2018, of a renovation, commissioned by the diocese of Civita Castellana and financed by the Lazio Region.

The restoration and transformation intervention in the museum, carried out on a project by the architect Romano Adolini, allowed the creation of the exhibition structure for a total area of ??about 1000 square meters.

On the proposal of the mayor of Sutri, Vittorio Sgarbi, also thanks to the agreement with Monsignor Romano Rossi, bishop of the diocese of Civita Castellana, the building is dedicated to Bishop Doebbing and has been a museum since 14 September 2018.
