Alatri

It is the ancient Aletrium, one of the oldest centers of Lazio, which was one of the main cities of the Italic people of the Ernici and one of the so-called saturnian cities.

The inhabitants are known as alatresi, alatrensi or alatrini.

Known above all for the pre-Roman acropolis surrounded by megalithic walls, well preserved, of which the Porta Maggiore stands out for its grandeur, followed by the Porta Minore or dei Falli, it also has a significant heritage of monuments of considerable architectural and artistic interest, such as the collegiate church Romanesque-Gothic of Santa Maria Maggiore, the concathedral basilica of San Paolo, the churches of San Francesco and San Silvestro, the proto-monastery of San Sebastiano, the nineteenth-century monumental fountains, the Gottifredo palace and the Conti-Gentili palace adorned with a large mural sundial .

The city of Alatri rises on a bigemine hill in the heart of Ciociaria, on the slopes of the Ernici Mountains which constitute the natural border of Lazio with Abruzzo.
