Santa Maria Nova - Villa dei Quintili

Located on the 5th mile of the Via Appia Antica, the Villa dei Quintili, the largest residential complex in the suburbs of Rome, is part of the Appia Antica Archaeological Park.

Thanks to the discovery of a lead pipe bearing the name of the owners, it is certain that the complex belonged to the brothers Sesto Quintilio Condiano and Sesto Quintilio Valerio Massimo, members of a senatorial family and consuls in 151 AD.

The Quintiles were killed by the Emperor Commodus in 182-183 AD. Originally the Villa was accessed from the Appia Antica through a large arcaded garden with a monumental nymphaeum which was later transformed into a fortress in the Middle Ages.

The farmhouse and the watchtower, raised on an imposing monument from the 2nd century AD, illustrate the transformations of the Appia area over the centuries.

Excavations in the area have re-emerged a spa from the 2nd century AD, with mosaics depicting gladiator and circus games, a stretch of paved road, a cemetery area from the 2nd century AD

It is possible to visit the complex of Santa Maria Nova according to the times and methods of access to Villa dei Quintili.
