National History Museum of Latvia

The Latvian National History Museum , is a national history museum in Riga, Latvia.

It was founded in 1869 by the Latvian Riga Society.

It has been housed in Riga Castle since 1920 and in 1924 gained the status of a state museum. Its mission is "to collect, preserve, research and disseminate the spiritual and material culture from Latvia and the world from ancient times to the present day, which has an archaeological, ethnographic, numismatic, historical or artistic significance, in the interest of the Latvian nation and of its people.

Since May 2014, the main exhibition space has been temporarily located on Freedom Boulevard (Brīvības bulvāris) in a three-story building dating from 1875, originally built as a family home by architect Heinrich Scheel. The location is close to the Freedom Monument. For many years it was painted with an advertisement for the Diena newspaper, often visible in photographs of the monument.

In 2015 it was replaced with an advertisement for Air Baltic. From 1946 to 2009 the building was used as the Faculty of History and Philosophy of the University of Latvia. After the reconstruction and restoration work is completed at the Riga Castle, the museum is expected to return to its permanent home in 2018.

The Popular Front museum, located in the former headquarters of that Third Awakening organization, joined the museum in January 2015.

There is enough in the museum to see, study and learn for endless days, because a tour will only cover part of what's in the museum. Human evolution, horse animals and birds from all over the world, collections of insects, plants and minerals, a journey through the history of the Earth, recreation of the volcanic eruption, sky studies, multiple exhibitions, modern and interactive displays, quizzes and stories a visit to the museum will be fondly remembered by both young and old visitors!

The Latvian National Museum of Natural History is one of the oldest multidisciplinary natural science museums in the Baltics and houses the largest collection of natural specimens available to the public in Latvia.

The museum dates back to 1845, when members of the Baltic German intelligentsia in Riga founded the Society of Nature Explorers, with a museum and library. The unique natural science collections of the Himsel Museum, which operated in Riga and was one of the first public museums in Europe, have been transferred to the museum's ownership.

Having survived to different times, today the Natural Museum of Latvia preserves versatile collections of natural objects from Latvia and around the world, for a total of 200,000 specimens.

A reconstruction of the Latvian mammal exhibition is underway until autumn 2020.
