The Dehon Theater is an important theater in Bologna.
The programming usually begins towards the end of September, when the main Bolognese theaters are still closed, and continues until late May. Genres range from classics (from William Shakespeare to Moléere), to dance and operetta, from contemporary Italian theater to Bolognese dialectal comedy.
The room has an auditorium with 500 seats. The stage measures 22.60 meters in width and 7.54 meters in depth. The proscenium is 10 meters in width and 5.15 meters in height.
The theater is located under the church of Santa Maria del Suffragio, in via Libia. The whole complex was built in the fifties on a project by the engineers Italo Gasperi Campani and Rodolfo Bettazzi with the collaboration of the architect. Umberto Spagnoli, of prof. Roberto Alessi, of the surveyor. Roberto Nardi and dr. Cesare Gennai. The theater takes its name from Leone Dehon, the founder of the Congregation of Priests of the Sacred Heart (also known as Dehonians), an order to which the parish where the church stands is entrusted.
Originally it was a parish cinema-theater, managed directly by the Dehonian fathers and used for the recreational and cultural initiatives of the parish. At the end of the sixties, the structure was faced with a serious crisis in terms of public and receipts, due both to the growing popularity of television and to the progressive depopulation of the neighborhood. The parish therefore decided to give the theater in management to some theater companies.
Currently the theater is managed by the Teatro Aperto cultural center, which carried out the complete renovation of the venue in 1986 and has activated a theater school since 1990. The permanent company of the theater is the Compagnia Teatro Aperto, founded in 1974 by Guido Ferrariniu, actor, director and playwright. The theater program includes both productions by the theater company and performances by guest companies.
