National Museum of Modern Art - Virtual Tour 360°

The National Museum of Modern Art in Tokyo, Japan, is the most important museum that collects and exhibits Japanese modern art. This Tokyo museum is also known by the English acronym MOMAT (Tokyo National Museum of Modern Art). The museum is known for its collection of 20th century art, including Western and Japanese style artists.

The National Museum of Modern Art in Tokyo is Japan's first national museum, dating back to 1952, when it was established as an institution under the jurisdiction of the Ministry of Education. The architect of the building is Kunio Maekawa.

Purchased adjacent rooms twice in a row and expanded the museum further. The recent restyling of the MOMAT was conceived by Yoshir? Tanichi, the father of Yoshio Taniguchi who designed the extension of the MOMA in New York.

The collection contains many important Japanese artists from the Meiji period and some contemporary Western prints. At the beginning of the 20th century, Kojiro Matsukata collected Japanese ukiyo-e woodblock prints from around the world.

In 1925, the exhibition of woodcuts that Matsukata collected overseas is considered the first of its kind in Japan. Today, the Tokyo National Museum houses around 8,000 ukiyo-e stamps from the Matsukata collection.
