Shit Museum - Bosco Castel

The Shit Museum (Italian: Museo Della Merda) is a museum in the province of Piacenza, in northern Italy, and is reported to be the first museum in the world dedicated to feces.

The museum was inaugurated on May 5, 2015, having been founded by the agricultural entrepreneur Gianantonio Locatelli and three partners.

This particular museum has been set up inside a renovated castle and analyzes the ... poop ... from an ecological point of view, as a very useful and reusable product, both as a fertilizer in agriculture, and as a basic material for bricks and plaster, and even as a methane producer; but also from the historical point of view, discovering all the uses of this “precious substance”, from the past to the present day. In addition, there is also a shop, where you can buy products made of "Merdacotta", a compound of shit and clay, such as vases, plates, glasses ...

The museum, set in a medieval castle in the village of Castelbosco, was created by a local dairy whose herd of 2,500 (some reports say 3,500) cows produce 30,000 liters (7,900 US gallons) of milk per day, which is used to produce Grana Padano cheese.

The cows also produce around 100,000 kilograms (220,000 pounds) of manure, which is turned into methane, fertilizer for the fields, as well as raw material for plaster and bricks.

The dung is used to generate energy to carry out the operation.

The museum has a symbiotic relationship with the farm and the cheese making facility.

It is a quirky by-product of the huge aggregation of cows and their prodigious production of cow manure.

Ecological recycling is an important theme of the museum.

This includes the reuse of backyard manure, but the museum also has many artifacts on display, including a piece of fossilized dinosaur feces, jars of feces, artwork inspired by human waste, ancient Roman medicinal cures that included excrement of animals and a collection of dung beetles.
