Palazzo Caldogno Dal Toso Franceschini Da Schio, better known as Ca 'd'oro, is a noble palace in Vicenza (Veneto- Italy), located along Corso Palladio, next to the Church of San Gaetano.
Extraordinary example of Gothic architecture in the heart of Vicenza. Private residence, it hosts commercial, artisanal and professional activities. The Ca 'd'Oro organizes guided tours, tastings, photo shoots and events. It also has furnished apartments for short stays. The Ca 'd'Oro is home to the important archaeological collection of Giovanni da Schio (1798-1868) and the ancient cellars of the Azienda Agricola da Schio. Inside, a superb monumental wisteria is cultivated, and a small urban garden grows.
The palace was built in the fourteenth century by the Caldogno family and completed in late Gothic style in about 1477 by the Dal Toso family, who enlarged the building on the back and completed the courtyard around 1500.
The ground floor was rearranged by Lorenzo da Bologna, author of the rich portal; the atrium and the interior were renovated in the late eighteenth century.
It is one of the most famous buildings in Corso Palladio: it was built for the Caldogno family in the 14th century, while the Dal Toso, the subsequent owners, first completed it in 1477 and then expanded it at the end of the century. It owes the name by which it is best known, Ca d’oro, to the strong references to Venetian architecture of the fourteenth century and to the capitals and cornices once painted in gold.
The palace develops around a square courtyard, which houses stone material from the collection of Giovanni da Schio (1798-1868), and on three levels: a base and two noble floors.
The sculptural-architectural decoration by the workshop of Tommaso Lombardo and Bernardino da Como, who created the leaf moldings and floral motifs, is of the utmost importance. For some scholars the portal is instead of Lorenzo da Bologna. Bombed during the Second World War, it was restored by Ferdinando Forlati between 1945 and 1949.
The palace is included in the list of UNESCO World Heritage Sites as part of the "Palladian Villas of Veneto" site and represents an important point of reference for architecture and history enthusiasts. Today, Palazzo Da Schio Ca' d'Oro is privately owned and is not open to the public, but can be admired from the outside during a visit to Vicenza.
