Cordellina Palace

Cordellina Palace is a palace in Vicenza (Veneto-Italy) built at the end of the 18th century, located in Contrà Riale.

It was built in the Palladian style by Ottone Calderari, although the original 1774 project was much larger and more ambitious, so much so that it should have extended to Piazza San Lorenzo. The client was the Venetian jurist Carlo Cordellina (the same of Villa Cordellina), who had bought and had the previous buildings occupied by the Jesuits demolished.

The façade has two superimposed orders: Doric semi-columns on the ground floor and Ionic semi-columns on the main floor that delimit tabernacle windows. As per Palladian lesson, the gables of the windows alternate in crescent and triangular shapes. The internal courtyard has a double loggia with columns of the same order as the facade.

The interiors are adorned with sculptures by Vicentine artists, including the bust of Calderari and a female statue, both located in the upper loggia and sculpted by Giambattista Bendazzoli. The frescoes were made by Paolo Guidolini and Girolamo Ciesa from 1784 to 1789; during the Second World War a bombing on 18 March 1945 destroyed part of the works, in particular the paintings by Ciesa on the ceiling of the loggias.

Cordellina Palace underwent extensive restorations between 2007 and 2011. The restoration of the frescoes continued until the end of 2012 thanks to the collaboration with the students of the ENGIM Veneto restoration course.

Owned by the Bertoliana Civic Library (whose headquarters faces the front), the building is used as a cultural center, home to temporary exhibitions and conferences.
