The Fraschini Theater is the city's opera house in Pavia. Opened in 1773, it is in use for various theatrical performances. The Teatro dei Quattro Nobili Cavalieri - Fraschini's original name - was designed to counter the whims of the noble Giacomo Omodei, the only owner of a theater in Pavia, a gentleman accustomed to imposing his own privileges even on the public, forced to submit to useless impositions, such as waiting for the show to start until he arrives.
In 1772 four noble lords from Pavia united to form the Society of Knights: Count Francesco Gamberana Beccarla, Marquis Pio Bellisomi, Marquis Luigi Bellingeri Provera and Count Giuseppe de' Giorgi Vistarino.
They shared the administration and direction of the theater and had entrusted the project to carry it out to Antonio Galli da Bibbiena, representative of an ancient and prestigious family of set designers-architects.
The works for the construction of the Teatro dei Quattro Nobili Cavalieri began in 1771 and the theater inaugurated its first season in 1773, in the presence of the Archduke Ferdinand of Austria.
The theater was inaugurated on May 24, 1773 with the opera Il Demetrio, composed by the Czech composer Josef Mysliveaek on verses by Pietro Metastasio
