Called "Colle" until 1867 (due to its position perched on the hill) it assumed its current name in that year, following the visit of the King of Italy, Umberto I.
It has been inhabited since prehistoric times, as evidenced by numerous archaeological finds dating back to the Paleoveneti civilization. In Roman times the communication artery that connected the large centers of Oderzo (Opitergium) and Ceneda (Cenetae) passed through its territory.
