Fountain of the Three Vises

Fountain of the Three Vises. This characteristic tri-front fountain, located in front of the Town Hall and today for ornamental use, refers to the origins of the toponym Treviso (from Tervisus: three views) and the formation of the city, which arose from three primitive nuclei on the respective heights of Piazza dei Signori , Piazza Duomo and Sant'Andrea.

The lower part has a circular basin into which the water flows from the mouths of four stylized lion heads, symbols of the strength of the liquid element. The upper herm, a copy of a nineteenth-century specimen, was originally located on the staircase of the Palazzo dei Trecento.

Characteristic and original Treviso fountain, located in front of the entrance to the Town Hall, represents a three-headed herm, a copy of an older sculpture now lost. The herm rests on a hexagonal stone column, placed in the middle of a circular stone basin, surmounted by a capital adorned with three lion faces from whose mouth, by means of a slender metal torch, the water is delivered in a continuous jet . It is fed by the aqueduct.
