The Independence Monument, also known as the Monument to the Dead for the Fatherland and affectionately called by the Treviso people as the Teresona, is a marble sculpture located in the historic center of Treviso in Piazza dell'Indipendenza, next to the Palazzo dei Trecento and the palace. former seat of the Chamber of Commerce.
The statue, the work of Luigi Borro, represents the personification of the province of Treviso (and not Italy as many mistakenly believe), which tramples the chains of Habsburg domination. In his right hand he holds a spear to which the Italian tricolor flag is attached, while his left hand carries a laurel wreath. The work is dedicated to the Treviso patriots of the Risorgimento who died in 1866 during the third war of independence which led to the unification of Treviso and the Venetian provinces with the Kingdom of Italy, sealed by the plebiscite of 21 and 22 October 1866.
The monument is 7.13 m high up to the tip of the spear, of which 3.30 m of the pedestal and 3.83 m of the Carrara marble statue. On the Istrian stone base there is the bronze dedication: "To the dead for the Fatherland, the Province MDCCCLXVI".
The allegorical work was inaugurated on 20 September 1875 with a public ceremony, which was also attended by the poet Giosuè Carducci.
