The d'Avalos Palace - Archaeological Museum, Ancient Costume and Art Gallery

The d'Avalos palace is located in Vasto, in the province of Chieti, once the residence of the Marquises of Vasto, until 1806. In 1974 the municipality of Vasto bought the palace from the d'Avalos family and later had it restored by founding various museums.

According to some hypotheses, its origin is medieval, but certain data are lacking, however the first mention is in an act reported by the seventeenth-century chronicler Nicola Alfonso Viti who mentions the leader Giacomo Caldora, feudal lord of Vasto.

In 1427 sanctions an indemnity for the Augustinian friars since he himself has used part of their vegetable garden or garden and lived in the relative factory.

This, perhaps, would prove that the noble of Vasto would not have restored an old building but would have built a brand new one.

Subsequently this building is praised for its magnificence, among which Flavio Biondo in the fifteenth century defines it as "superb", but no other descriptions or images in particular remain of the original construction.
