Door San Tomaso

Porta San Tomaso is a door that opens onto Treviso's sixteenth-century walls. It is located in the north-eastern area of the center, facing the current Pontebbana road heading north.

It is certainly the most majestic of the three doors, entirely covered with decorative elements in Istrian stone that reflect the pattern of classic triumphal arches. The whole is concluded by a peculiar dome in wood and lead. The lion of San Marco that stands out in the center of the external front, although ancient, is not the original, having been placed here in 1857.

It was built in 1518 by the podestà Paolo Nani (it was supposed to be called "Porta Nana" and is surmounted by a statue of Saint Paul) on a project, perhaps, by Guglielmo Bergamasco. The name refers to a nearby church dedicated to St. Thomas of Canterbury, which was destroyed.

Between 1910 and 1938 the gate was crossed by the track of line 1 of the Treviso tram network.

Since the end of 2011, on the occasion of the completion of the renovation of the two sides of the door, it has been closed to motor vehicle traffic. Before that date, in fact, it was one of the connections between the internal and external ring roads (PUT) and allowed, one-way, to connect piazzale Burchiellati with viale Fratelli Cairoli, near viale Vittorio Veneto (strada Pontebbana). The renovation, which lasted two years, was financed by Veneto Banca.

Named after St Thomas of Canterbury, from a nearby disappeared church. Lavish architecture in white Istrian stone, open to the north towards the Strada d'Alemagna, built in 1518 under the mayor Paolo Nani (it was supposed to be called Nana and, at the top, there is the statue of St. Paul). Attributed to G.Bergamasco, it takes up the tripartite scheme of the classic triumphal arch, with protruding columns, ornaments and coats of arms in high relief. Large ancient but not original Marcian lion, relocated in 1857. Characteristic removable cover with an inflected dome, in wood and lead. Interior with three naves, of elegant proportions. The sober facade facing the city bears the inscription "Dominus custodiat introitum ed exitum tuum" on the cornice.
