The castle has very ancient origins: in 809 two Lombard nobles, Faulo and Autari had the church of S. Mamiliano built, donated to the abbey of Farfa.

The memory of this ancient building lives on in the current name of the medieval castle  which seems to have been placed to guard the bold bridge of the abbey, from the Etruscan era.

The current appearance of the castle dates back to the 12th century. In the 13th century it was perhaps owned by the Templars: a settlement was formed next to it which in 1313 housed 96 families.
