The family residence where the painter Tiziano Vecellio was born is a sturdy 15th-century Cadorian building located on Arsenale Street in Pieve di Cadore. During its construction period, this dwelling represented a typical refuge for a distinguished local family, including notable members such as notaries, timber merchants, and those responsible for public administration.
The current appearance of the building is the result of interventions commissioned by the Magnifica Comunità di Cadore, which has owned it since 1926. These interventions were overseen by engineer Giuseppe Palatini from Pieve di Cadore and took place in 1928-30.
They included the demolition of the anterior extension, which had been added in the 18th century by the owners of that era and had concealed the original façade. The demolition brought to light the ancient doors and windows of the original building, characterized by the small dimensions typical of the 15th century.
The present-day building comprises two stories of masonry, with an irregular floor plan. It features balconies, an external wooden staircase, and a double-pitched roof with shingle covering. On the ground floor, a spacious area with wood block flooring houses a collection of reproductions of Tiziano's drawings from the Uffizi Gallery in Florence, along with related documentation about the artist.
Upstairs, there are five captivating rooms where Tiziano likely spent his childhood and, subsequently, each time he returned to his hometown after relocating to Venice. In these historically rich spaces, one can still feel the essence of the artist: this sentiment is palpable in the kitchen with its grand foghér (hearth) and hood, accompanied by a service area, in the rooms, and especially in the intimacy of the stùa, clad in wood and featuring a rustic coffered ceiling.
